She has also sung for  the Prince of Wales, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, Queen Sonja of Norway, President Tarja Halonen of Finland, her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaelle Jean, and numerous other leaders of Canada, as well as for Nelson Mandela and Kofi Annan.

J.P.CORMIER Celebrates Christmas

Date

Occurs Friday, December 1, 2017 until Friday, December 1, 2017

J.P. Cormier is a man with many musical talents. He is a skilled songwriter, a gifted singer, and an extraordinary musician who has accomplished success with more than one instrument.

During his long career, he has won many competitions, including the Canadian Open Guitar Championship, the Southern U.S. Fiddle Championship, and the Southern U.S. Banjo Championship. He has also worked with a number of big-name artists and appeared on the ever-popular Grand Ol' Opry over two dozen times.
His debut album, “Out of the Blue”, was released when he was only 16 years old.

Cormier was born in London, Ontario, Canada. When most kids were just starting kindergarten, he was already showing a strong interest in music.
Soon that interest proved to be an impressive natural talent. He taught himself to play the guitar. It would only be the first of many string instruments he would master in the coming years.

Not long after Cormier's ninth birthday, he won his first guitar competition, holding his own against musicians of all ages. He landed his first steady professional job when he was only 14. It was a weekly bluegrass television show called Up Home Tonight. Two years later came the release of a debut album filled with instrumental bluegrass music that showcased his guitar skills.

After some time appearing at a number of festivals, Cormier became the mandolin player for the famous bluegrass-gospel group the Sullivan Family.
He spent a number of years afterward touring with the group, and with other major artists.

In 1997, Cormier, all grown-up, finally finished a sophomore offering, Another Morning, for his fans.

The award-winning recording was followed by a third full-length album, Heart & Soul. Along the way to making a name for himself, Cormier has performed with countless artists, the list reading something like a who's who in music, including Alan Jackson, Marty Stuart, Bill Monroe, Waylon Jennings, Travis Tritt, Vince Gill, Kitty Wells, and many others.

If his musical career had crashed to an end with the start of the new millennium, Cormier would still have touched enough parts of the music world to ensure that his legacy lasted long after

“Appreciating the art of Maud Lewis" with Alan Deacon

Expert on Maud Lewis coming to Yarmouth

Maud Lewis expert Alan Deacon will be giving a special talk titled “Appreciating the art of Maud Lewis” at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Yarmouth in the Community Room. Deacon not only has the largest private Maud Lewis collection in Canada (spans three decades of her work), he also authenticates her paintings for all the major Canadian art auction houses. In 2011 and 2013 Deacon gave a talk at the Mayberry Gallery in Toronto for their two successful Maud Lewis exhibitions. He says, “It’s rather like being a detective! Authentic Mauds always have certain nuances in the work. I think that’s how I became an authority–by studying and looking at them closely.” This talk is sure to be informative and entertaining! Everyone is invited! Alan Deacon, would be willing to see any Maud Lewis paintings people care to bring along. He is willing to offer a verbal authentication and appraisal of Maud Lewis items.

Art Gallery of Nova Scotia Yarmouth

Community Room Show August 18, 2017 – October 22, 2017

A Sense of Place

The five members of the Artist's Way Collective have used their varying art disciplines to evoke time and space in in their latest exhibition. Opening at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia Yarmouth on August 18, "A Sense of Place" reflects personal experiences ranging from traveling in France to walking around the backyard.

The group, who have been exhibiting together since 2013, consists of two painters and three fibre artists.  Working in acrylic, Nadine Belliveau has explored “place” as position in society and in the life cycle. Sherry Caldwell, also working in acrylic, has created paintings inspired by "place" during a recent visit to France. Penny Berens, Grace Butland and Diane Clapp all work with fibre, incorporating eco-dyeing and stitch. Berens’ work is inspired by the rocky soil around her house in Granville Ferry. Butland has taken inspiration from the trees and flowers in her back yard and along the French Basin Trail in Annapolis Royal. Clapp has evoked personal experiences ranging from working with endangered species to a recent visit to Arizona.

The twenty-five pieces in this exhibition reflect an impressive range of imagery and technique.

The artists will be on hand to discuss their work and inspiration on Saturday, September 9, from 1 to 3 p.m.

For more information please call Art Gallery of Nova Scotia Yarmouth 902 749 2248.

“This Is Us” Art Exhibit

"This is Us" is a photographic essay which explores the joy of living in Southwest Nova Scotia.  Sue Hutchins, who curated the exhibit, put out a call to the local photography community for images of people actively enjoying life in this area we call home.  After receiving over 400 images, she culled it down to 172 which she divided into 17 different sections representing activities we love.  "We Make Music",  "We Paddle", 'We Create" are just a few samples.

The exhibit runs from June 15 to September 15 in the Community Room of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.  If you are considering visiting us, or moving here, it presents a wonderful overview of our area.

Part of the Authentic Host Program Part of the Best of YAS

This exhibition showcases examples of Maud Lewis’ paintings from the Permanent Collection, returning the renowned folk artist’s work to the place of her birth, Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. From views of oxen teams working the fields to lighthouses standing watch along the rocky shores, Maud Lewis’ paintings reflect the spirit of rural Nova Scotia and a life inextricably bound to the land and sea.

Maud Lewis (1903-1970) was born to John and Agnes Dowley on the Yarmouth and Acadian Shore of Nova Scotia. Although there is some debate about her exact birth place, recent research has revealed that Maud was born in the town of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. The backdrop of her playful and colorful images, her only experience of the world extended to an area between her birthplace in Yarmouth County and her married home in Marshalltown, Digby County.

In the world of folk art Maud Lewis is a legendary figure. Her life and accomplishments have been celebrated far and wide in nationally touring exhibitions, publications, and, most recently, on the silver screen in the 2017 cinematic release Maudie. Be sure to come see Maud's painted house always on display here at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. #maudliveshere
