Living Wharves
Monday, August 2nd - Friday, September 17th - 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm
Living Wharves is designed to tell the story behind the seafood of Yarmouth & Acadian Shores – home to one of Canada’s largest fisheries. Over 40 species of fish are harvested from our shores, and thousands are employed in this industry. Most people have a “fish story” or two to tell, and they want to share it with you.
Join both active and retired fishermen (and women) at community wharves throughout the region to learn their stories and try your hand at fishing skills. Hear about storms and working conditions, bravery and skills. Try your hand at splicing (braiding) rope and tying knots. It’s much harder than it looks, and a lot of fun to try!
Demonstrations take place five times a week throughout Yarmouth & Acadian Shores. The schedule repeats each week. In case of rain, please call (902)-742-6639 to confirm location. Each wharf and fishermen has their own speciality – no two demonstrations are alike, and you will have a lot of fun at each!
- Monday: Dennis Point Wharf, West Pubnico
- Tuesday: Port Maitland Wharf
- Wednesday: Wedgeport Tuna Wharf
- Thursday: Belliveau Cove
- Friday: Killam Brothers Wharf, Yarmouth
‘Living Wharves’ is part of a multi-year effort (called “Savour the Local Sea”) to make the fishery more accessible to visitors throughout Yarmouth & Acadian Shores. In the coming years, look for cooking classes, guided tours and other hands-on opportunities to experience the fishery.
