Gather your friends and head on down to Yarmouth & Acadian Shores to explore 29 historic and cultural sites that tell the Acadian story of SouthWest Nova Scotia. Bring your GPS and either download a copy of the PDF or pick up a map-brochure of this self-guided tour from a Visitor Information Centre. Consult www.geocaching.com for “Une tournée acadienne / An Acadian Tour”(look for over 20 caches that are placed by the username ”Acadiancacher”). Please note that caches are not located on any paid admission portions of sites. Happy treasure hunting!

Sea Captains' Homes and Mercantile Heritage Walk

Civic Address: Clustered from Albert St. through to Parade St. in Yarmouth. More throughout the Town and Area.

Yarmouth is home to 400 sea captain’s homes, built between 1850 and 1900. These impressive homes are a testament to the sea, and the wealth is has generated. Architectural styles include: second empire, Greek revival, Queen Anne revival, Gothic revival, Georgian, Italianate, vernacular and eclectic. Chebogue Meadows Interpretative Trail

Chebogue Meadows Interpretative Trail

Civic Address: In Brooklyn on the Hardscratch Road
Amenities: Rest areas, interpretive panels.

A 4.5km hike through 12 distinct habitats including a black spruce swamp, meadow, hardwood hill, and wetlands. This trail provides the hiker with valuable insight into both the natural and managed forests in the interior of Nova Scotia.

Ellenwood Lake Provincial Park

Civic Address: off Highway 1, turn onto Route 340, follow signs to Park

This 282 acre protected provincial park boasts beaches, sport fishing, a picnic park and other activities. A 2km hiking trail within the park is accessible by hikers of all ages and abilities, and hosts a wide variety of plant life, birds and animals. Amenities: restrooms, picnic tables, rest areas.

A walking trail extends behind Universite Ste Anne to the beach. Parts of the trail also continue along the beach.

 

 
Piau’s Walk

Piau’s Walk

Civic Address: Route 1 at the Belliveau Cove Park.

5 km hike on the Piau's Walk Trail. The trail starts in the park and proceeds through forest and shoreline and past an old Acadian cellar. It will take you about an hour to finish this loop. It is a very interesting seaside trail and has interpretive panels along the way.

Pubnico Park Wind Farm

Civic Address: At the very end of Highway 335, in Lower West Pubnico

Explore the rocky shoreline on the tip of West Pubnico, watching boats fish for both shellfish and ground fish. Nearby, on 5.2km of access roads, 17 windmills produce enough green energy to supply about 13,000 average Canadian homes. This hiking experience is both interesting and educational.

Rails to Trails

A continuous 132 km long trail, constructed along the abandoned rail corridors in Yarmouth & Digby counties. The trail weaves in and out of many small villages, and links up with other “rails to trails” projects in Nova Scotia. There are many entry and exit points along the trail, and some areas are still under construction. Please consult with the Nova Scotia Visitor Information Centre or your accommodation for the nearest location.

 
Rocco Point Chapel & Trail

Rocco Point Chapel & Trail

Civic Address: Highway 3 to Ste. Anne du Ruisseau, turn down Rocco Point Road
Amenities: Restrooms, rest areas

A .5km trail located at Rocco Point (est. 1784), site of the first Acadian Mass celebrated post-deportation. Points of interest include a chapel, Stations of the Cross and a boardwalk leading to an observation deck. Rocco Point is an especially rich birding site as it is surrounded by salt water.

Stan O’Brien Interpretive Trail

Civic Address: Highway 3 to Robert’s Island, in the village of Glenwood

A 1.5km trail leads through the Goose Creek Marsh management area to an island dominated by oak trees. Pass along an area of dykelands constructed by Acadian settlers in the late 1800s. Many waterfowl, including herons, kingfishers, and several species of ducks are abundant along the trail.

Civic Address: Highway 3 in Arcadia at the School

The Utkubok trail climbs through 12 distinct wildlife habitats, while overlooking a tidal river and saltwater marsh. Strategically placed boardwalks lead to look-off points and many beautiful photo opportunities. Although stairs are placed along the uphill parts of the trail, the groomed paths wind along the slopes making it wheelchair accessible with assistance. Amenities … rest areas

Bike Route, Cape Forchu

Bike Route, Cape Forchu

Traffic: Moderate
Road Condition: Paved
Distance: 10 km, one way
Terrain: Gently Rolling

The road out to Cape Forchu Lightstation twists and turns, offering dozens of spots for photographers. The route hugs the ocean, and passes through an active fishing village in John’s Cove. There are several stops to pull over and rest, or to explore the coastline. The lightstation itself at the end of the route is the 2nd most photographed in Nova Scotia.

From the Visitor Information Centre in Yarmouth, turn left onto Main Street heading North. Turn left turn onto Hwy 304 south, Vancouver Street (horse statue at intersection). Turn left on Leif Erikson Dr., stay on Hwy 304 until the very end; the road ends at Cape Forchu.
