TERROIR: THEN AND NOW: Art Gallery of Nova Scotia

TERROIR: THEN AND NOW

Saturday, 23 June 2018 to Sunday, 9 June 2019

June 23,2018 to June 9, 2019

Bringing together elements from Terroir: A Retrospective and Terroir: A Nova Scotia Survey, this exhibition looks at historical and contemporary regional artistic production through the culture from which it emerges.

Borrowing from the language of wine, the word “terroir” refers to the complete natural environment in which a particular wine is produced, including factors such as the soil, topography, and climate. Then and Now draws from the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia’s permanent collection - including new works acquired through A Nova Scotia Survey – and provides a broad examination of art and artists Nova Scotia’s terroir has and continues to produce.

Maud Lewis Exhibit: Art Gallery of Nova Scotia

MAUD LEWIS Exhibit
June 23, 2018 to June 9, 2019

An adjunct to the Terroir: Then and Now exhibition, this focus on Maud Lewis showcases examples of her artwork and is especially appropriate given the importance of Yarmouth as a place in her life. Her paintings clearly draw from her surroundings and memories from her childhood. From views of oxen teams working the fields to lighthouses standing watch along the rocky shores, Maud Lewis’ paintings reflect the spirit of rural Nova Scotia and a life inextricably bound to the land and sea.

Maud Lewis (1901-1970) was born to John and Agnes Dowley on the Yarmouth and Acadian Shore of Nova Scotia. Although there is some debate about her exact birth place, recent research has revealed that Maud was born in the town of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. The backdrop of her playful and colorful images, her only experience of the world extended to an area between her birthplace in Yarmouth County and her married home in Marshalltown, Digby County.

In the world of folk art Maud Lewis is a legendary figure. Her life and accomplishments have been celebrated far and wide in nationally touring exhibitions, publications, and, most recently, on the silver screen in the 2017 cinematic release Maudie.

CREATIVE MINDS at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia

CREATIVE MINDS WITH PROFESSSIONAL DANCER AMBER D'ENTREMONT

Sunday, 27 January 2019 - 1:00pm to 3:00pm

Amber d'Entremont started her professional journey in 2010 when she studied contemporary, ballet and modern dance at The School of Toronto Dance Theatre. After teaching and performing throughout the Greater Toronto Area, Ms. d'Entremont returned home to open a creative space where she had room to move, paint, sculpt, take photographs and more.

She states: "I'm a dancer, prefer the term movement artist. I believe that walking, running and the simple movements of your morning ritual to be a dance. I love choreographing because it often involves research on a subject that I may know nothing about. Sometimes spending hours with google leads to a great piece and other times I don't create anything and end up knowing random facts about a subject, the last one was seagulls... that went nowhere. But that's not entirely true either because even though I didn't create a piece about that subject I did use bird movements to inspire my own.

To be a good mover one just must be mature, have self discipline and listen. Listen to the sounds in a room, listen to your body and move accordingly, and listen to your teacher’s directions. To be a good choreographer, well I'm still sorting that out but so far, it is having a clear image and/or message you want to deliver. And in my opinion a great choreographer can do so without spoon feeding while also making sure the audience isn't confused, because nobody wants to sit there and feel foolish for not getting it."

ADMISSION

Members free, general admission applies to non-members.
A small gift of appreciation and respect will be given to all participants.

THERE’S A BURGLAR IN MY BED at Th’Yarc

October 11th, 12th, 13th, 18th, 19th, 20th, 7:30pm

Tickets $17.00  Members $16.00 (Service Charges may apply)
Members must call in or come to Box Office in order to receive Member rate.

William Worthington III and his wife are both going to be away for the weekend from their two hundred acre Massachusetts estate with its sixteen bedroom mansion, he to Delaware to shoot ducks with the DuPonts and she to her mother's in Boston. Both have, in fact, arranged trysts with their respective lovers in the estate's beach cottage. Inevitably their paths cross and divorce is in the air. Neither is willing to give up the world famous Worthington necklace, so each devises a plan to steal it. True to the laws of farce, both simulated burglaries are scheduled for same night. Fun filled chaos ensues: mistaken identities, unlikely romantic liaisons, a bumbling private detective, a fake necklace, one very determined nymphomaniac and two scantily clad pseudo nuns sharing a single skirt. "Where did they come from?" Confusion is piled on confusion until the mystery of who has the real necklace and who has the fake is revealed in a surprise ending.

Love, Loss and What I Wore at Th’Yarc

Love, Loss and What I Wore, is organized as a series of monologues and uses clothing and accessories and the memories they trigger to tell funny and often poignant stories that all women and their significant others can relate to. Like a long heart to heart with your best friend over coffee, the conversation meanders from a bittersweet story of a stepmother wearing the same style bathrobe as their deceased mom, to a couple’s musings of what they wore on their wedding day, to a rant about loathing the need to carry a purse, with odes to black clothing, cowboy boots and outfits that made mothers cringe.

HYPNOTIST CYRUS

Sometimes, when you got it, you just got it. And Jason Cyrus, well, he's definitely got it.
He has been called "the most electrifying hypnotist on the planet" and his show has been referred as "the most entertaining hypnosis show you'll ever see.".

But how did a kid from small town New Brunswick come to be one of the best hypnotists in the world? Let's go back a bit. Cyrus notes that "even as a young child, I always loved magic. I loved the power of the mind and the control that people can have over it." His father would often bring him to see hypnotists and magicians, leaving him impressed with what they could do, and fascinated with the world of magic. He began putting on his own magic acts, and was entertaining people from a very young age. Even as a kid, he was always a huge hit at parties.

Like many Canadian children, he was also involved in hockey, and he possessed enough talent
to make a Junior A hockey team in Ontario. One night at a private party, he saw a hypnotist perform and he just knew it was something he wanted to do. Subsequently, all his free time was soon taken up either learning all about hypnosis or playing hockey.

Cyrus has become one of the most popular hypnotists in the world. His live shows leave audiences amazed and with sore sides from laughing so much. Cyrus notes that his show "is not a typical hypnosis show. It's very theatrical, enthusiastic, mystical and magical. There is non-stop laughter." And not only that, but Cyrus says that the whole show is also very educational. It gives people "an understanding of what hypnotism is, and makes them aware of what a hypnotize person looks like."

His isn't a hypnotism show where participants are made to do embarrassing or degrading things while on stage. As Cyrus says, the whole show is "very family friendly, and no volunteer is left being disrespected." As a result, people are often clamoring to be on the stage at Cyrus's live shows. And if you think you can't be hypnotized, think again, as Cyrus notes, "if you wake up in the morning and go to sleep at night, you can be hypnotized." It's all a matter of trust.

JAMES MULLINGER

More Details

In April 2016, James sold out New Brunswick’s biggest indoor venue Harbour Station with his uniquely hilarious stand up show. This record breaking show was documented for a CBC documentary film 'City On Fire'  which has aired across Canada to rave reviews and high ratings. The stand up special of the show itself was picked up by Hulu and Amazon Prime so his tales of life in Atlantic Canada are now being enjoyed by (or confusing!) people in Germany, Japan and America. Read more about it here.

Since then James has toured extensively to packed houses across Canada and England and written and produced a big screen feature film starring actors from Downton Abbey and Twilight about his early years in stand up, which was described as "unmissable" by GQ Magazine and "essential viewing. A funny, realistic look at what it takes to become a stand up comedian," by the Montreal Times.

James is one of the Maritimes' biggest cheerleader. He loves it here and spends his time promoting it across the world and raising money for local charities and non-profits. James has raised more than $100,000 for East Coast charities. He has also become one of Canada's top comics, being nominated for both a Just For Laughs comedy award and a Canadian Comedy Award for Best Live Show.

He also launched his own international magazine The Maritime Edit  to share his love of Canada’s East Coast with the rest of the world.

This is only his second ever show in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. Book now for this show, last time it sold out and it will again!

REMINISCENCES: A RETROSPECTIVE ON YARMOUTH’S AFRICAN NOVA SCOTIAN COMMUNITY

Reminiscences: A Retrospective on Yarmouth’s African Nova Scotian Community is a community-based exhibit of oil and mixed media paintings and photographs put together through the efforts of four people to celebrate the history and contributions of Yarmouth’s African Nova Scotian community. The exhibit launches February 10, 2018 during Black History month and will run until March 25, 2018.

This project brings to light, through a visual portrayal, the contributions made by African Nova Scotians to the community of Yarmouth. This community-based exhibition has been developed by Tootsie Emin, a well-known Yarmouth artist, in consultation with: Sharon Robart-Johnson, Black Loyalist descendant and author of Africa’s Children: A History Of Blacks In Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, the only book written that focuses on Yarmouth’s black history from slavery to the then present day (2009); Eric Charles Smith, Black Loyalist descendant, retired civil servant, and community volunteer; and local businessman Ernest Bruce Johnson, Black Loyalist descendant and the first African Nova Scotian to graduate from the Dalhousie School of Pharmacy (1974). Yarmouth Town and County have been enriched by the contributions of many members of the Yarmouth African Nova Scotian community. The presenters deeply regret that they were unable to include everyone in this show.

MEASHA BRUEGGERGOSMAN “Home For The Holidays”

Noted by the San Francisco Chronicle as “a singer of rare gifts and artistic intensity”  and by the Miami Herald for possessing “a superb voice capable of just about everything”,  Canadian Soprano Measha Brueggergosman has emerged as one of the most significant  performers and vibrant personalities of the day. She is critically acclaimed by the international  press as much for her innate musicianship and voluptuous voice as for a sovereign stage presence far beyond her years.  Ms. Brueggergosman has been honoured to participate in a number of very special events,  including the gala re-openings of Roy Thomson Hall and the University of Michigan’s Hill Auditorium, Canada Day celebrations from Parliament Hill in Ottawa, and the opening ceremonies of the XVI International Aids Conference in Toronto – her performance presented under the  auspices of MAC Cosmetics – sharing the stage with Bill Gates and President Bill Clinton.

She has performed at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland during two consecutive years, and has given a royal command performance for Queen Elizabeth II. She has also sung for  the Prince of Wales, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, Queen Sonja of Norway, President Tarja Halonen of Finland, her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaelle Jean, and numerous other leaders of Canada, as well as for Nelson Mandela and Kofi Annan.

J.P.CORMIER Celebrates Christmas

J.P. Cormier is a man with many musical talents. He is a skilled songwriter, a gifted singer, and an extraordinary musician who has accomplished success with more than one instrument.

During his long career, he has won many competitions, including the Canadian Open Guitar Championship, the Southern U.S. Fiddle Championship, and the Southern U.S. Banjo Championship. He has also worked with a number of big-name artists and appeared on the ever-popular Grand Ol' Opry over two dozen times.
His debut album, “Out of the Blue”, was released when he was only 16 years old.

Cormier was born in London, Ontario, Canada. When most kids were just starting kindergarten, he was already showing a strong interest in music.
Soon that interest proved to be an impressive natural talent. He taught himself to play the guitar. It would only be the first of many string instruments he would master in the coming years.

Not long after Cormier's ninth birthday, he won his first guitar competition, holding his own against musicians of all ages. He landed his first steady professional job when he was only 14. It was a weekly bluegrass television show called Up Home Tonight. Two years later came the release of a debut album filled with instrumental bluegrass music that showcased his guitar skills.

After some time appearing at a number of festivals, Cormier became the mandolin player for the famous bluegrass-gospel group the Sullivan Family.
He spent a number of years afterward touring with the group, and with other major artists.

In 1997, Cormier, all grown-up, finally finished a sophomore offering, Another Morning, for his fans.

The award-winning recording was followed by a third full-length album, Heart & Soul. Along the way to making a name for himself, Cormier has performed with countless artists, the list reading something like a who's who in music, including Alan Jackson, Marty Stuart, Bill Monroe, Waylon Jennings, Travis Tritt, Vince Gill, Kitty Wells, and many others.

If his musical career had crashed to an end with the start of the new millennium, Cormier would still have touched enough parts of the music world to ensure that his legacy lasted long after
