Old Stone Cemeteries
The Founders Cemetery, the Free Will Baptist Cemetery, and the Calvinist Baptist Cemetery in Beaver River and Port Maitland, Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia, Canada are the final resting places of many of the early settlers of Yarmouth County. Many of these people are descended from the founders of Yarmouth, and more than 2/3 are Mayflower descendants, having come to the area from Massachusetts in the 1760’s.
Old Stones is committed to the restoration and maintenance of the properties. Old Stones cemeteries are the first cemeteries in the world to be fully QR enabled. Each and every resident has been profiled and has their own webpage, which can be accessed by using your smartphone or tablet while in the cemetery looking at the grave markers. The cemeteries are registered heritage properties in the Province, and many of the residents have interesting stories still to tell, and the information here can provide much genealogical detail.
Old Stones also gives tours occasionally, and is the sponsor of the annual Port Maitland Heritage day every summer. Self-guided tours are available using the map panels or the QR code system year-round, and Old Stones holds tours routinely every year. The cemeteries are located on Highway 1, at the north end of the village of Port Maitland and into Beaver River.
GPS coordinates for the first cemetery are: 43°59’38” N. 63°8’45”W.
