He is a favorite collaborator of many of Canada’s finest instrumental soloists, vocalists and chamber groups (including sopranos Isabel Bayrakdarian, Sumi Jo, Jane Archibald, Adrianne Pieczonka, Suzie LeBlanc and Erin Wall, cabaret artist Patricia O’Callaghan, mezzo soprano’s Julie Nesrallah and Susan Platts, violinist Joshua Bell, and with prima ballerina Veronica Tennant on a production entitled “Invitation to the Dance). AUTISM ARTS Exhibition at the Art Gallery of NS

AUTISM ARTS

Saturday, 22 June 2019 to Sunday, 10 November 2019

This exhibition celebrates the artistic accomplishments of the young people who participated this past year in the very successful Autism Arts Saturday art classes at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia Western Branch in Yarmouth. Autism Arts is a recreational art program which provides a safe and supportive environment for children and youth to express themselves creatively. It also provides a natural and organic social environment that encourages interaction, acceptance, and friendship.

The projects presented in this exhibition were designed by artist educator Jay LeBlanc to invite experimentation with a variety of art processes and materials. The nature of each project encouraged participants to express and communicate their thoughts, ideas and feelings while taking into consideration the technical elements of making art.

Thank you for the generous support this year from 100 Women Who Care in Yarmouth Country, and The Friends of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in Yarmouth.

Guiding Principles Exhibit at the Art Gallery of NS

GUIDING PRINCIPLES

Thursday, 20 June 2019 to Sunday, 17 November 2019

Guiding Principles is an installation of ArtsSmarts Nova Scotia 2018 project artwork. It was produced by Grade 8 students at Sherwood Park Education Centre in Sydney, Nova Scotia.

For this project, local visual artist Kate Adams guided Elizabeth Lalonde and her Grade 8 students through an in-depth study of Dene Suline artist Alex Janvier’s monumental artwork, Morning Star. The students also studied the Seven Sacred Teachings, a set of teachings on human conduct towards others. Many Indigenous groups follow their guidance.

Inspired by the teachings and Janvier’s Morning Star, the students developed a design for Guiding Principles, the large-scale mural now hanging at Sherwood Park Education Centre. The mural reflects these Teachings and also focuses on resilience, respect, relationships and reconciliation.

"Over the years I have learned that our students are more willing to create, share their ideas, thoughts, and knowledge when asked to make something for someone else. In this project they will be the role models; showing their fellow students, as well as school staff and the larger community, how to navigate through school life."  – Elizabeth Lalonde, teacher at Sherwood Park Education Centre

This exhibition was made possible through the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia’s ArtsSmarts Nova Scotia program with the generous support of Arts Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Department of Education.

DEREK EDWARDS - SO HERE’S THE THING Live at Th’YARC

"So Here's the Thing ..."  - A breath of fresh air, finely honed and relentlessly funny!

Take a break from the world and settle in for a seamless glide over life's troubled waters. Like the canoeist seated deftly atop his life jacket, with whiskey and pot cookies sealed in airtight containers, Derek Edwards  has left little to chance in this polished comedic adventure. They say, "Brevity is the soul of wit." And like in a Hollywood movie when the fleeing hero has to jump off a cliff into a waterfall, and the bad guys say, "Nobody could have survived THAT," then they cut back to a single hand reaching out of the rushing water, finding purchase on a floating log. Derek is like that Sodden Log!

From Vegas to St. John's, this Just For Laughs veteran is universally considered to be among the comic elite. Certainly, his peers think so, as evidenced by the fact that he's a four-time nominee, and winner of Best Standup Comic - Canadian Comedy Awards, as well as a multiple Gemini nominee for Best Performance in a Comedy. As Rick Mercer says,

"Everyone knows Derek is the funniest man in Canada."

THE CARSON DOWNEY BAND Live at Th’Yarc

Who is Carson Downey?

Carson is a generous man who will give everything he has while on stage. He’s also done some fantastic things off stage. He’s been across the ocean to Afghanistan to play for the troops and across the bridge to donate his time and talents to local fundraisers. He will “wow” people at both events, not just because of the way he attacks his well worn Strat, but because he will treat each event with a ton of respect and take time to talk to people in the crowd before and after the show and “give them” an audience. He will listen to their stories and relate to them and then he will say “Thank You” for letting him play! He thanks you for letting him kick the blues in the ass, throwing them to the floor, and stomping on them!

Then later, he might drive over them in Brady’s ’66 Impala on the way to the next gig! There will be no time for crying about the Blues, instead Carson may ask you bare witness to the healing powers of the electric guitar, and your slack jaw will gladly nod and smile as cases of “toe tapping ” break out all around you. It will be a fun ride that you hope never ends. So, combine the generous man and with the exceptional guitar player and you’ll smile to your self as thou sit there catch one of Carson’s sets. You’ll smile because something will resonate with you. Something familiar and warm, for you see, when you do Catch Carson playing, you temporarily become part of the Carson Downey Family. It’s a big family, that’s full of love and passion fuelled by music and energy. And you want some of that don’t you? Sure there are only 3 guys on stage, but Carson come from a very big family of 5 brothers and 4 sisters, so he’s used to sharing and giving, probably more so then others.

Sara Corning Commemorative Weekend

A weekend of activities honouring Yarmouth County native Sara Corning is planned for mid-September, including the unveiling of a bronze statue of Corning, which will be located at what was once the site of Zion Baptist Church on Parade Street. The unveiling ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 14, and it will be part of a weekend that will include a play about Corning to be presented at Th’YARC.

Also in the works is a Saturday-evening dinner at the Rodd Grand Hotel.

Corning (1872-1969), who was a nurse, is regarded as a heroine for her efforts in rescuing and caring for thousands of orphans during her 11 years of service in Armenia, Turkey and Greece between 1919 and 1930. Jennifer Rodney Chown, co-chair of the Sara Corning Society, says the activities planned for Sept. 13-15 in Yarmouth will be a chance for locals and visitors to meet and to reflect on Corning and the significance of her humanitarian work. “The people of Yarmouth will feel so proud of their hometown girl,” she said, “and it will be just a wonderful opportunity for them to meet the descendants of the (children) Sara rescued and cared for. It’s a wonderful story.” Rodney Chown and David Chown – also co-chair of the Sara Corning Society – were in Yarmouth late last week and met with representatives of the Town of Yarmouth and the Yarmouth County Historical Society to discuss their plans. “The meetings we had with the town and museum were very productive and constructive,” said Chown, Rodney Chown’s husband, “and we’re very grateful for the support that the town and museum have offered us.”

The statue was paid for by a donor from the Armenian community in Toronto. The sculptor is from Montreal and is Armenian as well. The hope is to have an interpretive panel that would go along with the statue. The unveiling ceremony – which will take place in either the late morning or early afternoon – will be followed by a reception. Rodney Chown says people will have a chance to visit the Yarmouth County Museum and Archives and perhaps see some of the material there related to Corning. While the unveiling of the statue will be a highlight of the weekend, things actually will get underway Friday, Sept. 13, at Th’YARC with the presentation of a play about Corning by Chris Bolger, a Yarmouth-area resident and a member of the Sara Corning Society. The plan is to have two performances of the play Sept. 13 – one for students, one for the general public – and another on Sunday, Sept. 15. Bolger is working on the play with LunaSea Theatre Company of Halifax. It will be a single-person play. “The exciting thing,” Rodney Chown said, “is LunaSea would like to have a performance in Halifax following the one in Yarmouth and then they would like to take it around the province, so this will be a wonderful way to share Sara’s story.”

If Corning was alive today, Rodney Chown admits, she might be uncomfortable getting all this attention, given her humble nature, “but she would likely celebrate the friendships developing today between those from her home province and the descendants of those she helped to rescue and care for.” Regarding the dinner that’s planned for Sept. 14, Chown said more details will be announced in the coming weeks. They have some people in mind as a potential keynote speaker. Chown says they expect the weekend’s activities will draw people from away – including from outside Nova Scotia, perhaps even from outside Canada – people who have reverence for Corning and what she did. But beyond what’s planned for September, Chown says the longer-term goal is to ensure everyone has a chance to learn about Corning and “the heroism of this remarkable woman.” - Information courtesy of Tri-County Vanguard

William Worthington III and his wife are both going to be away for the weekend from their two hundred acre Massachusetts estate with its sixteen bedroom mansion, he to Delaware to shoot ducks with the DuPonts and she to her mother's in Boston. Both have, in fact, arranged trysts with their respective lovers in the estate's beach cottage. Inevitably their paths cross and divorce is in the air. Neither is willing to give up the world famous Worthington necklace, so each devises a plan to steal it. True to the laws of farce, both simulated burglaries are scheduled for same night. Fun filled chaos ensues: mistaken identities, unlikely romantic liaisons, a bumbling private detective, a fake necklace, one very determined nymphomaniac and two scantily clad pseudo nuns sharing a single skirt. "Where did they come from?" Confusion is piled on confusion until the mystery of who has the real necklace and who has the fake is revealed in a surprise ending.

Love, Loss and What I Wore at Th’Yarc

Love, Loss and What I Wore, is organized as a series of monologues and uses clothing and accessories and the memories they trigger to tell funny and often poignant stories that all women and their significant others can relate to. Like a long heart to heart with your best friend over coffee, the conversation meanders from a bittersweet story of a stepmother wearing the same style bathrobe as their deceased mom, to a couple’s musings of what they wore on their wedding day, to a rant about loathing the need to carry a purse, with odes to black clothing, cowboy boots and outfits that made mothers cringe.
