Bill Curry – Night Photography and Astrophotography: 2019 Starlight Festival

Night Photography and Astrophotography

Learn how to correctly capture and expose for nighttime objects in a 2 to 3 hour workshop offered to enable the SLR (or DSLR) user to obtain great images of the night and the objects we can see so well from our dark skies here in Nova Scotia. Bill owns two telescopes (a homemade 4.25″ kit telescope, and an 8″ SCT) and can also show participants how to make a “barn door” to keep track of stars.

Bill also details how to shoot for star trails and man made objects such as the International Space Station or other interesting items. Of course, when a special occasion comes along, Bill also takes part in showing off the sky and those amazing shows that nature puts on such as conjunctions, eclipses and comets. Bill’s work has been published by NASA and on websites like Space.com, so you know you’re learning from someone who has the experience to show you the path to the stars.

Time – normally a 2 to 3 hour session, obviously beginning after dark and being highly subject to weather. We only do “hands on” astronomy photography, so the workshop can be re-scheduled and participants should realize the limitations this brings. If, however, you’re in the Port Maitland area and it’s a clear night forecast – why not give Bill a call – the universe awaits your discovery!

Cost – $90 for a 2 to 3 hour workshop.

CREATIVE MINDS WITH JARED BETTS, Art Gallery NS

Sunday, 27 October 2019 - 1:00pm to 3:00pm

Jared Betts’s expressionist, gestural paintings provide an immersive sensory experience. Jared is from Moncton, New Brunswick and holds a BFA from NSCAD University. He has exhibited in over 100 group and solo exhibitions in Paris, Tokyo, London, New York City, Germany, Costa Rica and Iceland, as well as Canada.

Artist residencies have been a huge part of Jared’s creation along with the adventures that inspire the works. He will be showing slides as he talks about his art education at NSCAD and artist residency experiences. In 2010, he was an artist-in-residence at NES Artist Residency in Skagaströnd, Iceland, surrounded by the ocean, green lush mountains and moonlike landscapes with the wildest most powerful waterfalls that breathed inspiration and creativity into his work. In 2011, he did two Costa Rican residencies in the rainforest surrounded by eight-foot snakes, a baby praying mantis that lived on a flower next to his door, earthquakes, sloths, butterflies going in and out of his studio, six-foot iguanas on the roof, and even an occasional gecko hatching on his bedside table, all of which resulted in a two-month exhibition at the National Gallery of Costa Rica in a pink castle. Jared will also talk about his experience in Tokyo a few years ago where he got to see his dream city with all of the sushi and neon lights one could ever need.

Jared is the recipient of an Arts Nova Scotia grant and nine Arts NB grants. He currently works out of his studio in Aberdeen Cultural Center in Moncton.

CREATIVE MINDS WITH MIKE WEDGE, Art Gallery NS

CREATIVE MINDS WITH MIKE WEDGE

Sunday, 29 September 2019 - 1:00pm to 3:00pm

Mike Wedge was born and raised in England as an established “self taught” graphic designer. Having worked his whole life in the Advertising Agency world, Mike moved to Vancouver in 1992. A car accident in 2008 left him permanently disabled with vertigo and oscillopsia. Not ever being someone to go down without a fight, he decided to relocate to Yarmouth in 2017 and taught himself photography, tried “art,” and flat out reinvented himself.

On routine walks along Pembroke Beach, the garbage really troubled him, so he decided to do something about it and repurposed it into something creative. He never calls himself an artist. “That’s for real talent,” he says, but considers art very much as therapy. Every photo he takes he tries to get to know the person, and they in turn get to know him, which lead him to launch: Human Kind Portraits.

You will be captivated by Mike's passion about his crafts and the stories behind his pictures and reclamation art.

Yarmouth! Ryan Cook & Sunny Acres ft. A Tribute to Buck Owens

One night only in Yarmouth, NS! Ryan Cook & Sunny Acres return for a hometown show featuring a tribute to Buck Owens & The Bakersfield Sound at the Red Knight Tavern.

Tickets are $25.00 advance and $30.00 at the door.
They are available online at http://bit.ly/2LE5PUb and will be available to purchase at The Red Knight the week of July 29.
General seating and the show is 19+

About:
Ryan Cook & Sunny Acres are a five-piece eclectic Country/Western & Swing ensemble that blends jazz, hillbilly, & folk with home-brewed Canadian ballads. The band features Cook centre-stage on acoustic guitar in his familiar thumb-picking fashion along with Barry Seymour (drums), Dave Campbell (pedal steel), Jill Chambers (upright bass) and Phil Sedore (lead guitar). The show includes songs from Cook’s award-winning albums, most recently Having A Great Time (2018 Music Nova Scotia Country Recording of the Year), plus a special medley to Buck Owens & The Bakersfield Sound.

Owens created the “Bakersfield Sound”, a distinct flavour of country music that opposed the “Nashville sound” which charted 21 #1 hits on Billboard charts between 1963-1988. In this show you’ll hear the familiar songs of Buck’s catalog like “A Tiger by the Tail”, “Waitin in your Welfare Line”, “Together Again”, and collaborations/cover songs Buck worked into his shows of artists like Simon & Garfunkel, Ringo Starr, The Band, and Dwight Yoakam. It's a show that you will not want to miss!

AUTISM ARTS Exhibition at the Art Gallery of NS

AUTISM ARTS

Saturday, 22 June 2019 to Sunday, 10 November 2019

This exhibition celebrates the artistic accomplishments of the young people who participated this past year in the very successful Autism Arts Saturday art classes at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia Western Branch in Yarmouth. Autism Arts is a recreational art program which provides a safe and supportive environment for children and youth to express themselves creatively. It also provides a natural and organic social environment that encourages interaction, acceptance, and friendship.

The projects presented in this exhibition were designed by artist educator Jay LeBlanc to invite experimentation with a variety of art processes and materials. The nature of each project encouraged participants to express and communicate their thoughts, ideas and feelings while taking into consideration the technical elements of making art.

Thank you for the generous support this year from 100 Women Who Care in Yarmouth Country, and The Friends of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in Yarmouth.

Guiding Principles Exhibit at the Art Gallery of NS

GUIDING PRINCIPLES

Thursday, 20 June 2019 to Sunday, 17 November 2019

Guiding Principles is an installation of ArtsSmarts Nova Scotia 2018 project artwork. It was produced by Grade 8 students at Sherwood Park Education Centre in Sydney, Nova Scotia.

For this project, local visual artist Kate Adams guided Elizabeth Lalonde and her Grade 8 students through an in-depth study of Dene Suline artist Alex Janvier’s monumental artwork, Morning Star. The students also studied the Seven Sacred Teachings, a set of teachings on human conduct towards others. Many Indigenous groups follow their guidance.

Inspired by the teachings and Janvier’s Morning Star, the students developed a design for Guiding Principles, the large-scale mural now hanging at Sherwood Park Education Centre. The mural reflects these Teachings and also focuses on resilience, respect, relationships and reconciliation.

"Over the years I have learned that our students are more willing to create, share their ideas, thoughts, and knowledge when asked to make something for someone else. In this project they will be the role models; showing their fellow students, as well as school staff and the larger community, how to navigate through school life."  – Elizabeth Lalonde, teacher at Sherwood Park Education Centre

This exhibition was made possible through the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia’s ArtsSmarts Nova Scotia program with the generous support of Arts Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Department of Education.

DEREK EDWARDS - SO HERE’S THE THING Live at Th’YARC

"So Here's the Thing ..."  - A breath of fresh air, finely honed and relentlessly funny!

Take a break from the world and settle in for a seamless glide over life's troubled waters. Like the canoeist seated deftly atop his life jacket, with whiskey and pot cookies sealed in airtight containers, Derek Edwards  has left little to chance in this polished comedic adventure. They say, "Brevity is the soul of wit." And like in a Hollywood movie when the fleeing hero has to jump off a cliff into a waterfall, and the bad guys say, "Nobody could have survived THAT," then they cut back to a single hand reaching out of the rushing water, finding purchase on a floating log. Derek is like that Sodden Log!

From Vegas to St. John's, this Just For Laughs veteran is universally considered to be among the comic elite. Certainly, his peers think so, as evidenced by the fact that he's a four-time nominee, and winner of Best Standup Comic - Canadian Comedy Awards, as well as a multiple Gemini nominee for Best Performance in a Comedy. As Rick Mercer says,

"Everyone knows Derek is the funniest man in Canada."
